Frequently Asked Questions

1. I have a 2 year old daughter. Is she too young to take dance classes?

Nope!  We have a Tiny Tots class that is specially designed for 2 and 3 year olds. It is a fun introduction to music, rhythm, coordination, and basic movement. Students do not need to be potty trained.

2. My 10 year old son/daughter has never taken any formal dance lessons, how will he/she be placed?

Students are placed according to both age and ability, regardless of whether or not they have had previous training. New students will be evaluated by the director to ensure proper placement.

3. How many costumes will I need to buy for my child?

Students will typically need one costume per class. At Encore School of Dance, we have one year-end recital in June which a would require a costume. In some circumstances, students may perform in a second recital piece or take part in a production number, in which case they may need to buy a second costume. We make every effort to be very cost conscious!

4.  How do I know what kind of shoes my child will need for his/her particular class?

Please refer to our Policies page for dress code and shoe policy.  If you are still unsure of what you will need, your instructor will be more than happy to assist you. There are several dance wear catalogs with very wide selections available. There is also a dance store on Pierce Street in Kingston called All About Dance. The staff there are very familiar with each dance studios requirements.

5.  My child was very ill for two weeks and could not attend class.  What do we do about those missed classes?

Of course there will be times when a child will not be able to attend his/her regular class.  If possible, please notify your instructor ahead of time.  However, we do understand that there are times when that is not possible.  Classes can be made up by taking a similar class on a different day of the week. You may also speak directly with your instructor to schedule a make-up lesson.

6.  Why does my daughter need to take a conditioning/stretch class in addition to Pointe?

Pointe is a very demanding artform.  It is necessary for the health and well being of the student to attend this extra class in order to avoid physical strain and potential injury.
